Use Gnokii As Phone Manager On Linux OS

In the Linux OS (especially Ubuntu because I use this distro), most modems on the market can be directly used without requiring a complicated installation, plug and play. So also applies to most mobile phones that have features of a modem. With this simplicity, we can easily enjoy internet services from telecommunication service providers that we use.
But there is one problem, sometimes when we want to manage our sms (sending, receiving, etc.), phone book or anything on the modem that we use (for example, in this case we use the phone as a modem). This becomes a problem of its own in the Linux OS because Linux does not provide the "interface" for doing the things mentioned above. Unlike the Windows OS, which normally provides (in the sense provided by the manufacturer of the hardware itself, not from the Microsoft) special programs for the hardware that we use as a modem. Which point to use all the features in the hardware and the program usually come included in the purchase. This is why most modems can not be directly used in the Windows OS, because Windows OS does not directly include common drivers used by many modems on the market.

Is there a solution?

The answer is YES! Gnokii is the answer. Gnokii allows you to communicate with the phone over the serial cable connection, usb connection (support depends mostly on the operating system level support), infrared connection and bluetooth connection.
Gnokii provides many functionality of different areas for user to manipulate mobile phone.
You can send SMS, receive them and save them in the phone. Gnokii supports delivery reports, picture messages (Nokia own protocol), concatenated messages, wap pushes, unicode messsages. Gnokii allows you to send and receive logos and ringtones over SMS.

Features

  • Gnokii offers you possibility to read and write phonebook. Phonebook entries can be displayed in human readable form or can be exported to comma separated output, vCard version 3.0 format or ldif format. You can import data from the same formats. Please note, that supported phonebook entries depend on the phone features and therefore may not be all imported.
  • Gnokii supports either calendar or todo lists. gnokii is capable to export calendar to iCal files and import them from the same format. Most calendar features like different types of events, recurrence, start and end times are supported.
  • You can initiate and answer calls with Gnokii.
  • Among other Gnokii capabilities you'll find security options like entering PIN, ringtone and logo handling and many many other.
Gnokii has been tested and can be used in Linux, BSD, Solaris dan Windows OS. What a great software I think.

Installation

Please visit official download page here to download newest Gnokii. Or if you Linux users, Gnokii has been included in the Linux repository. So you can directly install it through Synaptic Package Manager or through the shell with this code:
sudo apt-get install gnokii
Linux will automatically install Gnokii on your system. Follow the instruction until done, and enjoy the application.
